COLUMN REINFORCEMENT

A column was a vertical member carrying the beam and floor loading to the foundation. The main constituents of RC columns were the longitudinal bars, which take the main load. These were tied by lateral steel bars called stirrups. These lateral ties achieved three main purposes.

  •  Keep the longitudinal bars in position before concreting
  •  They prevent the individual buckling of the main bars
  •  They prevent the diagonal shear of the column

Stirrups should be fixed while allowing the required spacing as indicated in the drawings. In brickwork, stiffer columns are used to get a proper bond between bricks.
