To protect the reinforcement from corrosion, and for the combined action of the reinforcement and concrete to be effective, it is essential for the reinforcement to be surrounded by impermeable concrete. For these reasons all reinforcement has to be embedded in certain
Minimum
distance from the surface, this distance is called the „cover‟ will have to
determine as shown in the drawings.
On
this site for maintaining covering, we used cover blocks and stools. Cover blocks
are mainly two types; they are cement cover blocks and plastic spacer blocks.
Commonly these cover blocks are made for various thickness depending on the
place where it has been used. Normally for the footing, we kept a 50mm cover and
for the beams and columns, it was 25mm. the correct cover is achieved by using
spacer blocks which are usually small mortar blocks. Cement cover blocks are
made of 1:2 cement, sand mixture, because cover blocks must have good strength
to get the load of reinforcement net. In our site, we used cement cover blocks.
Cover blocks are placed between stirrups and formwork for beams and columns.
Stools
are made from steel-cut pieces and it used to maintain the cover of the top of
bases and slabs. Its height is depended on the covers and steel sizes we used.
The
coverings for various items, which were used in our site are shown in the following
table.
